In August 2023, Cargill and BAR Technologies launched its ground-breaking WindWings® innovation bringing cutting-edge wind propulsion to commercial shipping for the first time.

Overview

Mitsubishi Corporation’s Pyxis Ocean, chartered by Cargill, is the first vessel to be retrofitted with two WindWings®, measuring up to 37.5 metres in height and fitted to the deck of the ship to harness the power of wind.

“The maritime industry is on a journey to decarbonise—it’s not an easy one, but it is an exciting one” said Jan Dieleman, President of Cargill Ocean Transportation.

“At Cargill, we have a responsibility to pioneer decarbonising solutions across all our supply chains to meet our customers’ needs and the needs of the planet. As an industry leader, in partnership with visionary shipowner Mitsubishi Corporation, we are not afraid to invest, take risks and be transparent with our learnings to help our partners in maritime transition to a more sustainable future.”

Co-funded by the European Union as part of the CHEK Horizon 2020 initiative, the project represents a unique retrofit solution that is capable of decarbonising existing vessels, which is particularly relevant given that 55 per cent of the world’s bulker fleets are up to nine years in age.

The estimated CO₂ reduction is based on daily savings per WindWing® of 1.5t fuel and 4.7t of CO₂ with annual utilisation of 280 days. For Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) the estimated reduction is based on a daily saving of 1t of CO₂ and observed vessel usage.
